Joe Budden and former cohosts Rory and Mal rehash podcast issues

Joe Budden was a guest of the Need-To-Know podcast hosted by two of his former employees, Savon and Alex. In that episode, the two revealed details of a secret meeting between original co-hosts, Rory Farrell and Jamil “Mal” Clay Rory and Mal.

Savon and Alex alleged that the meeting was cultivated by Rory and Mal and that after the Spotify deal that was acquired by the podcast, the everyday work flow had changed drastically and Rory and Mal felt overworked and underpaid among other things.

Rory and Mal, who were fired in May of 2021 by Budden, responded in a Patreon episode claiming the total opposite in that it was actually the employees Savon and Alex that felt overworked, not them.

“Everything else, it is what it is. I just don’t like being quiet about these types of narratives. Everything else can be entertainment, this and that, but don’t put something on my jacket when I was trying to put my money up, $40,000 a month that I was going to get, to give back to y’all, that’s not overworked and underpaid,” said Budden.

Mal also shared his grievances with the situation, expressing that it’s shameful that anyone in the media space would say false statements with the intention of going viral.

“If you people got all these studios and these cameras… why not get up there and keep it thorough? Why is everybody chasing fake things just to go viral? Why is everyone forcing a moment? That’s why I started questioning my standpoint in this whole thing… when I know I didn’t do nothing wrong! I’m questioning if me standing on business was the right thing to do,” said Mal.

Savon and Alex have since responded to backlash from Rory and Mal, seemingly being confused for being called liars.

“I feel like we’re in the Matrix. Solely because back to the word liar. Two sides have been going back and forth with each other for at least two or three years now. We’ve never, on this podcast, spoken about anything. It never felt like something we had to get to because we were a part of that fold. So to be called a liar about something that I didn’t know needed to be lied about was a little confusing to me,” Alex stated.

One alleged factor that led to the initial separation between Joe Budden and his two co-host was Budden’s treatment towards them in the business even though they were longtime friends. Mal has stated before that as there is good morals and integrity behind every action, you can do business with friends without dealing with the potential complications that could come with that.

Students from Jackson State University shared their own opinions about that sentiment. Nijah Brister, a senior journalism and media studies major from Jackson, Miss., believes that it depends on the relationship between each friend, stating that not everyone has your best interests at heart.

“I think a business can be run with a friend if the trust is there or depending on the friendship they have. I feel this way because not everyone is genuine and someone can easily mess you over by using and taking your ideas,” said Brister.

Kyla Thomas, a senior marketing major from Chicago, Ill., believes that friendship and business can co-exist if kept separate while also acknowledging that decisions are easier to make when you’re in business with a friend.

“I do think it’s possible to have a successful business while working with friends, you all just have to be able to separate the friendship from a business partnership in order to get things done. Sometimes being friends with your business partner can make decision making easier and smoother, rather than the relationship being strictly business based,” said Thomas.

Faith Shavers, a junior entrepreneurship major from Dallas, Texas shares her own thoughts, stating that a business can run best if there’s trust between everyone involved.

“I believe a friendship and a business partner can exist because the true form of a business is trust from the employees, managers, CEO, and to the consumers; they all have to trust one another to successfully run the business. I have a business with my sister, so it’s easier in my opinion to run a business with someone you are familiar with. Y’all both have the same goals and expectations. If not, then that when both parties lay out issues and concerns,” Shavers stated.

Shavers also stated that if there is no communication between everyone, the business cannot run effectively.

“Of course disagreements arise, but that is when compromise comes into the situation. There is no successful business without effective communication, so as long as that is there, you can run a business with a friend and still have companionship. I know many businesses run by families, friends, etc.  So, it is possible only if both put their best foot forward,” Shavers added.
