JSU engineering professor Dr. Mahmoud A. Manzoul was recently named a Fulbright Scholar and has returned temporarily to his native Sudan to help his alma mater there eventually earn American accreditation for its engineering program.
Manzoul, chair and professor of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science, applied for Fulbright status in July 2017 and was recently accepted.
“This is a prestigious award. Personally, I want to go back to my home country of Sudan and give back,” said Manzoul, who traveled to African nation Sept. 28. He’ll spend 10 months at the University of Khartoum, where he earned his undergraduate degree in electrical engineering. He expects to return to JSU in mid-July.
The nearly 20-year JSU veteran joined the HBCU’s College of Science, Engineering and Technology in 2001 as founding chair of electrical and computer engineering. He was pivotal in helping the program earn accreditation from ABET (formerly referred to as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology).
Meanwhile, in Khartoum, Manzoul is teaching a sponsored course by the U.S. State Department.
