Meteorology student studies sun’s corona, space weather during eclipse

Keon L. Gibson, a senior in the College of Science, Engineering and Technology, visited Wyoming for the solar eclipse that occurred in August. He measured specific emission wavelengths of the sun’s corona and used computer-controlled telescopes to study how Earth is being impacted by hazardous space weather.

Gibson, whose research was funded by the National Science Foundation, is part of the Significant Opportunities in Atmospheric Research and Science (SOARS) program. As well, he’s being mentored by science researchers from the High Altitude Observatory (HAO) of NCAR/UCAR in Boulder, Colorado. He received writing assistance from Boulder’s National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR)/University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR).
