Vanessa Hall-Harper is District 1 Councilor in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She is also the program manager for the Tulsa Health Department’s Healthy Living Program and an adjunct professor at Tulsa Community College in the political science department.

Hall-Harper earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science/pre-law in 1993 from JSU. She is also a community activist who assists The Institute for Developing Communities, Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma, North Tulsa Clean-up Campaign and the Phoenix District Development Council.

LSherie Dean is the public information officer for the Jackson Municipal Airport Authority. She is responsible for developing and implementing critical public relations and crisis management strategies to enhance the airport authority’s image.

Dean has also served on the executive committee for the 2011 Leukemia and Lymphoma Society MS/LA chapter’s Light the Night event, 2013 chair for the Minority Enterprise Development Week (MED Week) steering committee, committee member for Mississippi Greek Weekend, and social media manager for the Medgar and Myrlie Evers Institute’s 50th Commemoration of Medgar Evers’ Assassination. She earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration from JSU and is social media chair for the Jackson State University Alumni Association.

Dr. Maria Conston is the sixth president of Tidewater Community College in Virginia. She has worked in higher education for 30 years in Mississippi, South Carolina and North Carolina. Conston also has been an evaluator for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, where she has examined 14 schools, including two in Virginia, for reaccreditation. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from JSU, a master’s from Hood Theological Seminary in North Carolina and a doctorate from the University of Southern Mississippi.

Derrick Neal is executive director for the Williamson County and Cities Health District in Texas. Previously, Neal was director of the Victoria County Public Health Department and the Cuero-DeWitt County Health Department. As well, he had been director of the Abilene Taylor County Public Health District and program manager for the City of Houston Health and Human Services Department and Peoria City/County Health Department. Neal earned a Bachelor of Science in sociology from JSU, a master’s in public administration from the University of Illinois. He’s working on his Ph.D. in public administration.

Lindsey Hunter is the 11th head men’s basketball coach at Mississippi Valley State University. He had been an assistant coach at the University of Buffalo coach. Hunter spent 17 years in the NBA as a player and another two years as a coach in the league. The Utica, Mississippi, native lettered three years at JSU, where he led his team to an upset of UConn in the 1993 Postseason NIT.

Hunter was the 10th pick overall in the ’93 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons. Hunter played for Detroit from 1993-00. He later spent a year with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he won his first NBA title in 2001-02. Hunter then played for a year with the Toronto Raptors before returning to the Pistons from 2003-08, winning his second NBA title in 2003-04. He concluded his playing career with the Chicago Bulls from 2008-10.

Trenton Johnson, a 2019 biology graduate at JSU, is a research associate with Louisiana State University’s Lung Inhalation and Developmental Toxicology Laboratory. The native of Gloster, Mississippi, researches molecular mechanisms associated with pulmonary toxicity and inflammatory responses involving tobacco products. These include aerosols from “electronic nicotine delivery systems” (ENDS) such as JUUL and electronic-cigarettes (e-cigs). His past work as a JSU student earned him Volunteer of the Year honors in which he logged more than 250 hours of service in a single year, far exceeding the required 20 hours.

Dr. Steven Smith was named vice president of enrollment management and CEO of the Jackson county campus of West Virginia University at Parkersburg. Smith is responsible for the areas of recruitment, admissions, financial aid and first line operations, Smith is responsible for leading and directing faculty/staff activities and initiatives and also facilitating all campus operations.

Jody Owens was elected Hinds County District Attorney after a three-person race in 2019. Former director of the Mississippi office of the Southern Poverty Law Center, Owens ran on a SMART Justice platform that included re-entry programs for ex-offenders, mental health and rehabilitation treatment for those with addiction, support to the families of those affected by violence and collaborating with community organizations to find ways to reduce crime. Owens received his undergraduate degree from Jackson State University and a law degree from Howard Law.

Dr. Fran’Cee Brown-McClure was appointed vice president for student affairs and dean of students at Union College in Schenectady, New York. In her role as a member of the president’s senior staff, Brown-McClure oversees the Kenney Community Center, campus safety, counseling services, health services, career services, Minerva Programs, first year and senior year class deans, accommodative services, international student advising, residential life, fraternity and sorority life, student activities and hospitality. The dean of students at Spelman College in Atlanta, Brown- McClure was selected from among dozens of candidates following a national search. Brown- McClure received a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Texas at Austin in educational administration, a master’s in social work from Boston University and a bachelor of science in psychology from Jackson State University.
